如何避免there is與there are開頭的英文句子

1. 將主詞移到句首

例句：

There is a cat in my room.

修改後的例句：

A cat is in my room.

在例句當中，主詞（cat）在句子中間，修改後的例句則將主詞直接移動到句首。主詞在句首的好處是讀者可以馬上聚焦在句子的主詞，在閱讀較長的句子時能掌握句子的重點。例句中的is在修改後移動到主詞後面成為動詞，there則可以刪去。

2. 直接刪去there is或there are

例句：

Due to the soaring housing prices, there are many young people in Taiwan who cannot afford to buy their own house and are forced to rent houses.

修改後的例句：

Due to the soaring housing prices, many young people in Taiwan cannot afford to buy their own house and are forced to rent houses.

更理想的例句：

Many young people in Taiwan cannot afford to buy their own house and are forced to rent houses due to the soaring housing prices.

許多學術作者在翻譯「由於房價快速飆漲，因此台灣有許多年輕人無法買房，被迫選擇租屋」這句話時，看到「台灣有許多年輕人」，便直接翻譯there are many young people in Taiwan。

然而，在這片語中there are為贅字，因為there are many young people in Taiwan與many young people in Taiwan意思相同，因此，在修改後的例句中直接將there are刪去。

第一種方法談到將主詞移到句首，能讓讀者更快速掌握到句子重點。因此，雖然修改後的例句沒有錯，但更理想的做法是直接將主詞（many young people in Taiwan）移動到句子的最前面。

3. 額外使用其他英文動詞

例句：

There are chemicals that can pollute the environment easily.

修改後的例句：

Chemicals that can pollute the environment easily exist.例句中談到有些化學藥品能夠輕易汙染環境。

由於不是所有化學藥品都會汙染環境，因此直接將there are刪去並翻成chemicals can pollute the environment easily是錯誤的，因為這意思是所有化學藥品都會汙染環境。

這時可以運用一些動詞（如exist）或重組句子，來避免無意間改變句子原有的意思。如果句子有上下文，也可以嘗試與上下文連結，如chemicals that can pollute the environment easily are found/are discovered/are created等等。
